A remarkably sophisticated entry to the wiki provider set
Wikidot is an exciting new development in the wiki provider field. Stand out features include a clean, clear presentation, it is free, no provider placed ads, lots of add on widgets, which really extend its capability, and a rapidly growing enthusiastic user base.
Editing is by a powerful but easy to use wiki markup language which writes good valid xhtml.
Wikidot provider statement
“Wikidot.com is a farm of Wiki Sites. Our mission is to provide free and professional wiki publishing, collaboration and communication solutions to anyone who needs it and wants it.
In other words — we are giving away free hosted wikis”
Wikidot is free and hosted
Wikidot has a free-hosted option only. You are allowed unlimited pages plus 100MB for storage of attachments. You can create up to 10 sites. There are likely to be paid options in the future, providing more sites and more storage capacity. They expect to release the software as open source sometime this year.
Domain names
You can either use a sub-domain name: www.YourUserName.wikidot.com or your own domain name: www.YourUserName.com.
Permissions on WikiDot prevent spam
You can limit permission to modify content on your wikis to only people you invite or keep it all to yourself. You can limit these permissions to whole wikis or to pages in a certain category. For example, if you want to lock a page so that only you can edit it you could put it in the category: ‘OnlyMe’ and set the permissions to that category to include only your name.
WikiDot Security
WikiDot regularly backs up its sites but do not guarantee the safety of your data. You can take a snapshot of your wiki whenever you want and store it on your own computer.

Editing a WikiDot wiki
WikiDot is edited with a powerful and easy to use wiki syntax assisted by a simple editor. The wiki syntax is converted into valid xhtml, which you do not get to see but which you can check by running pages through a validator such as the one provided by W3.org
WikiDot do not provide a WYSIWYG editor because they have not yet found one that produces code that satisfies their standards. Certainly the syntax handles images better than most, but not all, WYSIWYG editors I have seen.

WikiDot’s choice to stick with wiki syntax, until they find a really good WYSIWYG editor, is likely to mean that they will mainly attract users who spend a bit of time on a computer and are comfortable with the technical requirements. Having said that, it is very easy to use, very flexible and looks very professional. check out WikiDot.

I’ve recently begun using wikidot for a private project, and I like it, tho the lack of a WYSIWYG editor and the ease with which you can lose you work by accidently navigating away from a page in progress is very annoying.
One correction to your summary above: you CAN customise the CSS-based themes as much as you like, and can have several different themes in use on your site. They provide a CSS-only drop-down navigation menu which can be a very good way of imposing some structure on a site before people start filling it up.
Based on 2 weeks experience so far:
- free! no ads!
- backup your site to a downloadable zip archive (so at least you can preserve your content)
- customisable look and feel
- can provide your own CSS classes and styles as part of your “theme”
- can apply specific classes using the wiki markup syntax
- RSS feed
What I don’t like:
- because it is so flexible, set-up can take a long time
- documentation on the wiki markup extensions is not complete
- no automatic hierarchy of topics and pages
- must manually set parent-child relationship between all pages on your wiki if you want to use their site-map tool
- wiki editor provides no built-in support for the many extensions you will want to use
They do have the server software available for free download so you can run your own wiki server, but I haven’t had any luck getting that going yet.
Overall, I’m pretty pleased, tho I much prefer the ease-of-use of the pbwiki.com or wetpaint.com approaches.
Although I have never used another wiki for comparison, I love this wiki. I’ve built a couple of small sites now using it and it’s great. I’m css challenged though and am having trouble changing my theme. It is probably not a reflection of the wikidot though - it is likely user error. Give it a try, you have nothing to lose!
There are a couple of errors in the features list above. David has already highlighted that you can completely customise a wikidot site with CSS. But the other things I’ve spotetd are on flash and javascript, both of which can be embedded.
