Wiki comparisons: key to features

key to comparison table

This is the key for the wiki software comparison table, a table that compares wikis software and has links to in depth reviews. The features may not be available on all payment plans of a wiki package. Be sure to check that the wiki and payment plan you are considering has the features you need, by carefully exploring the providers website.

Free option

To be termed free, a wiki version must be permanently free, not just a free trial.

Most free wikis are cut down versions of their paid big brothers. Some have all the features of the paid wikis but only allow a limited number of contributors.

If you are considering starting a free wiki, make sure that any features you may need for future expansion are available in the paid versions of the same wiki. There are lots of disadvantages to having to change provider when you are already way down the track.

Hosted option

tickhere means that hosting is an integral part of the package. You can, of course, host some wiki packages on your own server or on that of a hosting service provider.

Download to your own server

tick means that you can download the package to your own server or host it on a server of your choice. Having it on your own server does stop you being reliant on someone else but means you have to take a lot more responsibility.

Often downloadable software gives you access to the code. This of course gives you a lot more flexibility, but only if you have the required expertise.

    Hi Arturas
I had a quick look at Comindwork and will get back for a thorough look as soon as I have finished a series of articles I am working on about the ways wikis can influence business outcomes.
After that I was planning an article on the future development of wikis in business. I was thinking that wikis would become integrated into business packages and so I really do need to check out Comindwork.
    Thanks for your comments.
    Mark

You have not listed Zoho Wiki among the compared wikis - but you know about Zoho because you commented on it as being a place for shared authoring of documents on one of your pages. I have not been able to find any information about it on Wikimatrix either. Will you ever be making comments on it? I can’t find anything about it except on its own website.
