Stikipad review: hosted wiki with free option

Stikipad is worth a look whatever your needs

Stikipad is a good easy to use feature-rich wiki with a good free option and paid upgrades at reasonable costs. It is worth checking out, whatever your wiki needs. There are one or two areas of weakness but my feeling is that if they took a little bit of venture capital on board they could easily sort these out and become a really big player in the wiki provider market.

Wiki provider statement

Stikipad wiki logo“We’ve built Stikipad with the intention of making it easy enough to use as a quick tool, but advanced enough to use for a big project. That’s why we’ve gone into the Stikipad Labs to make sure the features that you need are included in your plan - whether that be a Free account, or the Team account. We didn’t want you to have to drive a manual transmission and roll-up your own windows, after all.”

Range of wiki hosting plans

All plans, even the free one, have unlimited pages and unlimited authors. All the plans, except the free one, give you complete control of the cascading style sheets, custom templates and are completely ad free. Technical support is, as you would expect, better on the paid plans. Only the Power User and Team plans are adsense enabled.

Personal Unlimited wikis - 150MB storage - 1GB transfers - $4.95 per month

Team Unlimited wikis - 1GB storage -5 GB transfers - $14.95 per month

Domain names

You choose a sub-domain name, which goes something like: www.YrChoice.stikipad.com/YrWiki.

You can use your own domain name as in: www.YrChoice.com but only in the Power User and Team plans.

Permissions for contributing to Stikipad wiki

Permissions you give for people to contribute to your Stikipad wiki are pretty flexible but generally apply to each individual wiki and cannot be varied for individual pages. You can, however, lock individual pages from being altered by anyone but you. Authors can be invited by anybody, just authors or just you.

View your wiki - anyone, authors only, or just you

Insert new pages - anyone, authors only, or just you

Edit existing pages - anyone, authors only, or just you

Make comments on pages - anyone, authors only, or just you

Wiki Security

Stikipad has pretty good security arrangements. They have additional log-in procedures for uploading attachments as they were subject to attacks by people uploading malicious attachments in the second half of 2006. Stikipad does not allow you to block input from people who have proven to be malicious in the past.

Editing a Stikipad wiki

Stikpad has a very good WYSIWYG editor with good handling of text, tables and smilies. The biggest problem is that you cannot insert images using the WYSIWYG editor. To insert images you need to resort to one of the markup languages that Stikipad supports. Neither of these is hard to use but you cannot expect occasional users to make the effort. Easier insertion of images is a real priority for users if the Stikipad forum is anything to go by. Unfortunately Stikipad does not accept html. This means you cannot prepare your page offline, on an html editor, and paste it in.

Markup - Textile and Markdown editing

Content supported

Stikpad’s ability to embed unlimited to-do lists is useful for people, who want to be organised or who are working on a small project. Google maps can be useful if you are advising other wiki users of the location of an event.

Images - Difficult to insert images unless in markup language.

Stikipad is very visitor friendly

Visitor friendliness is a real strength of Stikipad. It looks good and has lots of navigation options. Your control of content, layout and keywords means that you can optimise your wiki web site for search engines. The paid plans that give you control of the Cascading Style Sheet give you complete control of the whole page. This ability to make the page look any way you want, allows you to incorporate your wiki into a web site that you are already using. Visitors will not even realise they are moving from one application to another.

Search engine friendly Keywords for each page, control of headers and layout.

Wiki Management

Stikipad simplifies wiki management so that you can get on with the creative side of running the wiki. They do not make any claims about server uptime. However they did have some server downtime early in 2006 but seem to have had no problems since. It would be nice to have some embedded statistics so that you can see who and how your wiki is being visited. Stikipad is run by two young enthusiastic guys with a great attitude. They make a living from the Stikipad but do not appear to have a lot of resources to fall back on.

Help and Support

Stikipad support

Stikipad has pretty good support. For the paid plans, you get personal support. On the free plan there is still good online support even though it is sometimes a little difficult to navigate. Stikipad has not yet developed a strong online community and posts on the forum are infrequent and not always responded to by Stikipad.

Loyal wiki community - Not well established yet

Community forum - Yes, Here it is

FAQs - Yes

Help - Yes, personal on paid plans

I really like Stikipad although some things about it are a little frustrating. In my opinion Stikipad is a player with a great future.
