Best free hosted wikis

A free hosted wiki provides a great way to get started on your wiki way

Here are some free hosted wikis that I recommend for wiki starters. Be careful though, a wiki can be addictive, you may want to upgrade. Make sure the free wiki’s paid option has all the options you will need when you want to develop your wiki further.

A free hosted wiki usually differs from its paid big brothers because there are provider placed ads on your pages, less features than the paid versions or allows fewer active users, i.e. users permitted to edit pages. Here are the ones I recommend.

Central Desktop

Central Desktop provides hosted collaboration solutions for businesses, but does have a free option. They place great emphasis on maintaining the integrity and security of your data. The free plan limits you to five active members.

cyn.in wiki

cyn.in is definitely worth a look if you want a professional collaborative environment with heaps of useful features. The free option provides you with a very useful space on the internet. You can decide to keep individual pages private or share them with the world. Only two members can contribute to the free wiki version. If you work on collaborative projects you have plenty of options here.

Netcipia wiki

Netcipia: a hosted integrated blog and wiki that spotlights the future of wiki development. The free version gives you access to all the wiki features and unlimited wikis. You only need to pay if you want a dedicated server.

PBwiki

PBwiki users have a great sense of community, especially amongst educators who appear to be very willing to share ideas and tips. Help is very good and PBwiki seems to respond well to any problems or requests. The free version offers one wiki with unlimited pages. This is where my nine year-old grandson set up his first wiki. Payment is needed for additional features.

Socialtext

Socialtext was the first enterprise wiki and has Jimmy Wales, of Wikipedia fame, on its Board of Directors. It aims to keep ahead of the pack in providing easy online collaboration for all sizes of businesses. The free version limits you to five users.

wetpaint wiki

Wetpaint only has a free option. It has loads of features and a very good WYSIWYG editor. It pays for itself by putting ads on your site, so is not the best option if you think you want to earn some income from your wiki in the future.

wikidot: remarkable new wiki provider

Wikidot is a new wiki provider with free hosting. No WYSIWYG editor but it is edited with a powerful wiki markup language and puts no ads on your pages. No paid versions at the moment but you are allowed up to ten wikis with unlimited pages.

wikispaces

Wikispaces turns on a good solid performance even in the free option. The free version provides 2 GB of storage for files you want to attach to your wiki. Wikispaces offers a paid version at no cost to K12 (primary and secondary) teachers. This removes ads from the pages to protect students. Wikispaces say you can build your wiki in nearly every language on earth.

Hi. Great roundup of the options.

We’re taking another angle on the wiki idea with Swirrl, our upcoming product. At least one of our plans will be free. Please check out our blog at http://blog.swirrl.com

    Thanks.

I’m curious why you didn’t add stikipad in your best free hosted wikis? Any reason for not including it?

    Hi Brian
I used to be very enthusiastic about Stikipad but it got left behind by the alternatives. For example: users complained that inserting images was difficult but nothing changed for at least a year and I am not sure if it was ever changed. They changed the forum software they used because it was easier to start anew than get rid of all the spam they had accumulated and within a few weeks the new forum was full of spam.
The guys running it seem really genuine but somehow had not quite managed to get their act together when last I checked.

Mark, this information is EXTREMELY helpful to me. I’m researching free wikis for my association and your wiki reviews will definitely help me narrow down the choices.
