Wetpaint wiki: new features Nov 07

Wetpaint wiki have announced two innovative new features in their free hosted wikis.
The first of these offers a great way to organise comments from your wiki pages onto a central discussion forum. The wiki discussion forum allows you or your readers to access comment threads from the forum in three ways:

  • Recently updated threads
  • Most active threads
  • Threads grouped by keyword tags

The second new feature extends the flexibility of tables when you use them to organise your content or structure your layout. The previous WYSIWYG editor on Wetpaint wiki was already very good. But many users will find this upgrade a big leap forward. New WYSIWYG table capabilities include:

  • Select and merge table cells
  • Individually resize columns
  • Apply background color to table cells
  • Customize individual cell borders

It is not surprising that Wetpaint is a favourite for wiki novices.

EditMe: promoting use as CMS

The EditMe blog announces plans to promote its use as a Content Management System.

Matt, the EditMe founder, had plenty of experience at using several types of CMS for website development. He says they have become bloated and complicated because of their needs to satisfy the diverse needs of every user. The flexibility of wikis and the fact that as many or as few people as appropriate can contribute to their development often makes wikis a better choice

To promote this initiative EditMe are starting an affiliate programme for developers and freelancers who use EditMe when setting up websites for their clients. As my Editme review describes EditMe is a fully featured wiki system and my bet is that this will turn out to be a very successful promotion.

From a wider perspective, I believe this heralds another giant step forward for wikis. Already we have seen wiki and blog functionality combined in blikis. Here is another step with the introduction of CMS functionality.

Good luck with your promotion, Matt.

Web2, web2.0, web 2 or web 2.0?

Maybe web 2 exists, maybe it doesn’t, but there seems to be many ways of expressing it. I checked on google trends to see which term was most often used as a search term. There is a clear winner; ‘web 2.0′ took over from ‘web 2′ at the beginning of 2006 and continues to outstrip it and the others, all three of which remain in a flat line as web 2.0 soars.

If your interested, web 3.0 is barely visible on the graph.

All these expressions are well behind ‘wiki’. But are most people searching for wiki heading straight off to wikipedia?

Editme update: Oct 07

EditMe has released an upgrade that changes how Layouts and Style Sheets are managed. Layouts previously used XSL, which was limiting and difficult to use. The new layout technology offers a simpler method of creating custom designs for EditMe sites, and includes a programmable API for accessing site content in a more dynamic way than was possible before.

Best wiki for classroom education

Leaping into wiki

Teachers often ask which is the best wiki for classroom education. Wikis are understandably in demand by teachers. A wiki in the classroom gives teachers an additional tool to provide, identify and explore precious learning opportunities, using a wide variety of media.

The flexible student/material interface of a wiki in the classroom gives students chances to extend their education in different ways and students who are struggling with face to face classroom work often relish the extra time a wiki gives them to explore and understand a topic and welcome the additional media they can utilise.

Let us have a go at identifying the best wiki for classroom education.

Wikispaces review: hosted wiki with free option

My recent article on the best wiki for classroom education prompted me to take a fresh look at Wikispaces because of its offer of free no ads wikis for educators.

Wikispaces has its roots in wiki markup language but now has an effective WYSIWYG option, which means you can put together very presentable wiki pages without having to worry about or even see the code that lies behind them. The paid plans allow you to access html and css. Using these codes gives you much more control over the look and feel of your wiki.

If you want to try a paid plan, you get a 30-day free trial. Wikispaces are hoping you will love it so much, you could never go back!

Here is my full detailed review of wikispaces

What the !# bliki #! is a bliki?

A blog is a website with chronologically ordered articles or postings. A wiki is a website on which multiple authors can easily create and edit pages. Combining the words blog and wiki produces the ugly word, bliki, but combining the functions of wikis and blogs produces an incredibly useful class of online appliance. Blikis, I am sorry to use this word but the alternatives are even uglier, blikis are the next generation of online collaboration software.
