Getting your message across online

There is not much point writing if you are not trying to produce change. The changes you want might be for example a sale of a product or just a change in the reader’s mood.

Your writing will be tighter and more effective if you know what change you are trying to produce and incorporate that knowledge into a small number of well presented messages.

Article Messages

  • Messages are prominent
  • Messages are clearly and concisely presented
  • Article motivates reader to accept the messages
  • Article helps reader to implement the messages
  • Visual cues support the messages

Article content

  • Article is right length for reader’s level of interest
  • Article content is highly relevant to the reader
  • Topic is approached from the readers point of view
  • Language that may cause offence is avoided
  • Evidence is provided to give message legitimacy
  • Images and text that reader is familiar with are included

Article readability

  • Structure guides reader through text
  • Headings have stand alone meanings
  • Language centres around the reader
  • Active tense used whenever appropriate
  • Information couched in positive terms
  • Text broken up into easily digestible chunks, one idea per chunk
  • Chunks are well structured with content introduced in first sentence
